Welcome to Aikido Yuishinkai Manchester

Aikido Yuishinkai Manchester (originally The University of Manchester Aikido Club) was founded in November 1988 by Jonathan Davies Sensei and Sarah Williams Sensei. We are a member of Aikido Yuishinkai under the direct guidance and teaching of Maruyama Sensei, a student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido.

We are a small, friendly club with a broad range of members. Although the club is based at the University you don’t have to be a University student to come along, the classes are open to anyone of 18 years upwards who is interested in trying aikido.

The club was originally part of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) until UMIST merged with Manchester University and the club moved to its current home at the Sugden Sports Centre. The club has welcomed thousands of students over the last 30 years, many of whom still practice and teach aikido in the UK and overseas, as far afield as Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. We have a well defined grading system which is designed to take students through the foundation exercises and techniques in a way that builds on previous experiences and helps students to see their own progress and achievement. Over the years more than 30 club members have trained to 1st dan and many have then continued to 2nd and 3rd dan.

Aikido Yuishinkai Manchester is affiliated to the British Aikido Board (BAB) - the governing body for aikido in the UK and recognised by Sport England. We are dedicated to the safe, enjoyable and relevant practice of aikido. Our Principal Coaches are long term members of the BAB and are both Senior Coaches and Coach Tutors so that we enjoy a high standard of teaching and progression. All club teachers and many club members attend regular seminars with Maruyama Sensei and the Aikido Yuishinkai international instructors.
